Your Car's Different Fluids

posted on
As the owner of a car, it's crucial to understand the needs of your vehicle. Your vehicle is a complex machine made up of different systems and parts, and all of these require maintenance to continue functioning. What Fluids Does My Car Need?

Why Does My Car Use Fluids?

Your vehicle uses a variety of different oils, fluids, and greases for several functions. The primary function of most automotive fluids is to provide lubrication to reduce heat and friction. But every individual fluid also performs an additional function that is exclusive to that system.

What Fluids Does My Car Need?

  • Brake Fluid - This fluid gives your braking system the power it needs to come to a stop. Over time, the effectiveness of this oil minimizes and can lead to issues with your brakes.
  • Engine / Motor Oil - This oil ensures that your motor is protected. It does the job of removing heat, reducing friction, and protecting your engine.
  • Transmission Fluid - This is used to lubricate the parts of your transmission system. It allows for easy changing of gears so that they're not damaged.
  • Power Steering Fluid - This fluid is part of your car's hydraulic system. This allows you to turn your steering wheel easily and without much resistance.
  • Coolant - This does the basic function of keeping your engine and its components cool. It also does the job of acting as an anti-freeze, so that your engine can work, even on cold days.

Fluid Maintenance is Important

Ensuring that all your fluids are at the recommended levels is crucial to maintaining performance and preventing damage. Many of these fluids need to be changed regularly and should be part of your routine maintenance schedule.

How Often Should I Get Fluid Maintenance Services

  • Oil Changes - Every 7,500 Miles
  • Brake Fluid Change - Every 2 Years
  • Cooling System Fluid Flush - Every 5 Years or 100,000 Miles
  • Power Steering Fluid Flush - Every 2 Years or 75,000 Miles
  • Transmission Fluid Change - Every 30,000 - 60,000 Miles
While these are the mechanic recommended intervals, it's advised that you follow your manufacturer's guidelines when replacing fluids.
